Regular monthly prices, before tax. For Zoho, the monthly-billing price comes first, with the annual price in brackets:
| Market | FreshBooks Lite / Plus / Premium | Zoho Books Standard / Professional / Premium |

| Euro pricing | €16 / €30 / €50 | France: €12 (€10) / €24 (€20) / €36 (€30) |
Zoho Books also has a Free plan in every edition, plus Elite and Ultimate tiers in most. Offers when we checked: FreshBooks 80% off for 4 months (US, Canada) or 50% off for 3 months (elsewhere); Zoho had no discount listed. Compare both in your country with our comparison table.
Users, clients and invoice limits
This is where the two differ most, and it often decides the choice:
- FreshBooks limits how many clients you can bill: 5 on Lite, 50 on Plus, unlimited on Premium and Select. Its FAQ says archived clients count too, and only deleting a client frees a slot. Each extra team member costs $11 a month in the US (C$13, £8, A$16).
- Zoho Books limits how many invoices you create per year: 1,000 on Free, 5,000 on Standard, 10,000 on Professional, 25,000 on Premium and 100,000 on Elite and Ultimate. Bills and expenses have matching caps. Users are included: 3 on Standard, 5 on Professional, 10 on Premium and Elite, 15 on Ultimate.
So a freelancer with a few large clients can fit FreshBooks Lite. A business with many small customers (dozens of one-off jobs a month, say) outgrows FreshBooks’ client caps fast but rarely hits Zoho’s invoice caps.
Features compared
- Client billing: FreshBooks has unlimited estimates, recurring invoices, late fees and reminders, deposits, and from Plus, proposals, e-signatures and client retainers. Zoho Books covers quotes and invoices on every plan.
- Time and projects: FreshBooks includes unlimited time tracking on every plan, and project profitability on Premium. Zoho adds projects from Professional.
- Accounting depth: FreshBooks Lite has no bank reconciliation, double-entry reports or accountant access; those start on Plus. Zoho’s Free plan includes accountant access, and in the UK edition lists bank reconciliation and reports.
- Inventory and multi-currency (inventory compared): Zoho adds inventory and multi-currency on Professional (US), and Shopify, Etsy, eBay and Amazon connections with shipping labels on Elite. FreshBooks doesn’t offer inventory.
- Local tax: Zoho’s country editions list local tax handling, such as MTD VAT, MTD for Income Tax and CIS on the UK Free plan, and GST in India and Australia. FreshBooks UK includes MTD-compliant VAT returns on every plan.
Add-ons and payroll
| Add-on (US) | FreshBooks | Zoho Books |
|---|---|---|
| Extra users | $11/month per team member | $3/month ($2.50 billed annually) |
| Payroll | FreshBooks Payroll: $40/month + $6 per user | Zoho Payroll (separate product): $29/month + $5 per employee, billed annually |
| Payments | Advanced Payments $20/month (included on Select); cards 2.9% + $0.30 | Zoho Payments (fees not covered here) |
| Receipt capture | From Plus | 50 scans/month on Free, 200 on Standard; extra 50 for $8/month (billed annually) |
Three worked examples
Our calculations from US list prices, monthly billing:
| Situation | FreshBooks | Zoho Books |
|---|---|---|
| Solo freelancer, 4 clients, wants an accountant to log in | Plus: $43 (Lite has no accountant access) | Free: $0 (under $50K revenue) |
| Consultant, 30 clients, 1 assistant | Plus + 1 team member: $54 | Standard: $20 (3 users included) |
| Agency, 80 clients, 4 people | Premium + 3 team members: $103 | Standard: $20 + 1 extra user $3 = $23; Professional $50 if you need projects |
On price alone Zoho wins every row. The FreshBooks premium buys its client-billing workflow (unlimited time tracking from Lite, proposals, retainers, e-signatures). Whether that’s worth it depends on how much of your week goes on billing clients.
