Short answer

The best QuickBooks alternative depends on why you’re leaving. If it’s per-user pricing, choose Xero, which charges no per-user fees. If it’s cost, Zoho Books has a free plan and paid plans from $15–$20 a month. Freelancers billing clients should look at FreshBooks, and UK businesses at Sage or FreeAgent. And if you’re in India or France, where Intuit has withdrawn QuickBooks, Zoho Books has a local edition in both.

Prices come from each provider’s official pricing page, read on 18–19 October 2026. Some 2026 lists still quote older QuickBooks prices; the US page now shows Simple Start $38, Essentials $85, Plus $140 and Advanced $340 a month. To rank every option for your own country and business type, use our small business accounting software finder.

Why people look for a QuickBooks alternative

QuickBooks Online is a capable product, so a switch usually comes down to one of four things, all visible on Intuit’s own pricing pages:

  • Price. In the US, Simple Start is $38 a month and Plus, where inventory, budgets and project profitability live, is $140.
  • User caps. Simple Start allows 1 user, Essentials 3, Plus 5 and Advanced 25. Adding a person can mean moving up a tier.
  • A thin free plan. QuickBooks Free (US) allows 2 invoices a month and 1 bank connection.
  • Availability. Intuit says QuickBooks is no longer available in India or France.

Each alternative below fixes at least one of these. We’ve said which.

Xero: best for teams (no per-user fees)

Xero is the closest like-for-like swap, and it appears on nearly every 2026 QuickBooks-alternatives list we reviewed. Its big structural difference is users: Xero charges no per-user licence fees on any plan, so a five-person team pays the same as a solo owner. In the US, Early is $27 a month, $11 less than QuickBooks Simple Start. Xero’s US page also pitches itself directly at people leaving QuickBooks and offers free onboarding from a product specialist for your first 90 days.

Xero US pricing: Early $27, Growing $59 and Established $97 a month
Xero US pricing, 19 October 2026.

Watch the entry limits, though. Early caps you at 20 invoices and 5 bills, multi-currency needs Established ($97, vs $85 on QuickBooks Essentials), and inventory is an add-on. We go plan by plan, across 10 countries, in Xero vs QuickBooks.

Zoho Books: best value, and best in India

Zoho Books undercuts QuickBooks at almost every level. There’s a free plan (in the US, free while revenue stays under $50K a year, with up to 1,000 invoices). Standard costs $20 a month, or $15 billed yearly, and Professional, which adds projects and inventory, is $50 or $40 yearly. Compare that to $140 for QuickBooks Plus. Full details are in Zoho Books vs QuickBooks.

Zoho runs 18 country editions with local tax handling, plus a Global edition everywhere else. That makes it the obvious replacement where QuickBooks has left. The India edition’s free plan lists GST reports and filing, and paid plans start at ₹749 a month billed yearly.

Zoho Books India pricing: Standard ₹749, Professional ₹1,499 and Premium ₹2,999 per month billed yearly
Zoho Books India pricing (yearly billing), 19 October 2026. Monthly billing: ₹899, ₹1,799 and ₹3,599.

One thing to plan for: you can’t change an organisation’s country edition or base currency later, so pick the right edition at sign-up. Online sellers should check which Zoho tier connects their store in our ecommerce guide.

FreshBooks: best for freelancers

If QuickBooks feels like more accounting than you need, FreshBooks is built around invoices, time tracking and client payments. Lite is $23 a month in the US, with unlimited time tracking and expenses on every plan. Its Select plan includes “Easy Switch” data migration, and FreshBooks sells in USD, CAD, GBP, AUD, ZAR and EUR. UK Lite even lists MTD VAT returns.

FreshBooks US pricing: Lite, Plus and Premium plans
FreshBooks US pricing, 19 October 2026: Lite $23, Plus $43, Premium $70 a month.

It isn’t a full like-for-like QuickBooks replacement for product businesses: plans are limited by billable clients (5, 50 or unlimited), and inventory isn’t on the pricing page. We compare the two head to head in FreshBooks vs QuickBooks, and our freelancer guide adds Wave, Zoho and Xero.

Wave: best free alternative (US & Canada)

Wave’s Starter plan is $0 with unlimited invoices, estimates, bills and bookkeeping records, which is far more room than QuickBooks Free’s 2 invoices a month. Pro is $19 a month or $190 a year and adds automatic bank imports and receipt capture. Wave Advisors, its paid bookkeeping service, includes onboarding when you switch from other accounting software. Sage Accounting: best for UK payroll

UK businesses moving off QuickBooks often care about payroll and CIS. Sage now includes payroll in every UK plan. Start is £20 a month (1 user), Standard £43 (3 users, CIS) and Plus £59 (unlimited users, inventory and multi-currency), all excluding VAT. Sage also sells Sage Accounting in Ireland, Canada, South Africa, Kenya and Nigeria. Full details in our Sage Accounting review.

It’s not an option in the US: Sage retired its US cloud accounting product at the end of 2024.

FreeAgent: best for UK sole traders

For UK sole traders, FreeAgent is built around the UK tax year: Self Assessment, MTD-compatible VAT returns filed to HMRC, and payroll. Sole traders pay £19 a month and limited companies £33 (excluding VAT). It’s free while you keep an eligible NatWest, Royal Bank of Scotland or Ulster Bank business account, or an active Mettle account.

MYOB: best local option in Australia & NZ

Australian and New Zealand businesses have a home-grown alternative. MYOB’s Australian range starts with Solo, a mobile app for sole traders at A$99 a year. Business Lite is A$315 a year for up to 2 employees, and Business Pro A$70 a month, while AccountRight Plus (A$165 a month) handles inventory and faster pay runs. GST and BAS are built in, and Pro and AccountRight Plus offer a 14-day free trial.

Xendoo: if you’d rather hand off the books

Sometimes the real problem isn’t QuickBooks, it’s doing the bookkeeping at all. Xendoo is a US online bookkeeping service with a dedicated team and weekly bookkeeping. Plans start at $395 a month billed yearly (Essential, up to $50K in monthly expenses), then Growth at $695 and Scale at $995. That’s far more than software, because people do the work.

If you’re in India or France

Intuit says QuickBooks Online is no longer available in India, and QuickBooks products are no longer available in France. Options with an official local presence:

  • India: Zoho Books India: a free plan with GST filing, then ₹899 a month (₹749 billed yearly). Xero’s global plans, priced in USD from $29 a month, cover countries without a Xero regional site.
  • France: Zoho Books France at €12 a month (€10 billed yearly) for Standard, with a free plan. FreshBooks bills in euros (Lite €16), and Xero’s global plans are priced in USD.

The finder shows what’s sold in your exact country, with local prices.

Switching from QuickBooks: a checklist

  1. Pick a cut-over date, ideally the start of a month, quarter or financial year.
  2. Export from QuickBooks first: trial balance, open invoices and bills, and customer, supplier and product lists.
  3. Check what the new tool will import, and whether help is included (Xero lists free onboarding for 90 days in the US; FreshBooks Select includes Easy Switch).
  4. Enter opening balances as at the cut-over date, then reconcile your bank accounts in the new system.
  5. Keep QuickBooks read-only access long enough to answer questions at year-end, and ask your accountant before you cancel.

Which alternative should you choose?

  • Paying for extra QuickBooks users: Xero.
  • Want the lowest cost (or free): Zoho Books, or Wave in the US and Canada.
  • Freelancer or service business: FreshBooks.
  • UK business with staff or subcontractors: Sage Accounting (or Xero Ignite with CIS).
  • UK sole trader: FreeAgent.
  • Australia or New Zealand, prefer local: MYOB.
  • India or France: Zoho Books (local editions).
  • Don’t want to do the books: Xendoo (US).
